Air Conditioning FAQ's:

Q) My AC will only run for a little while and then I get no air coming out of my vents?

  1. Check your Air Conditioners Air Filter first. Make sure your Air Conditioner has clean air filters.
  2. Make sure all your vents are opened. Closed vents will cause freezing in your indoor coil/evap coil.

Q) What does “Seer” mean?

  1. SEER stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio, in a nutshell, the higher the SEER rating the more energy efficient the unit will be.

Q) My air conditioner is making a “rattle” noise, what could this be caused by?

  1. A “rattle” noise can be caused by several issues, more commonly we see this as a balance issue with indoor or outdoor motors.

Q) Is it safe to turn my thermostat “up” to a higher temperature while I am not home and then turn it “down” to produce cool air when I get home, or should I leave it in a medium range?

  1. This gets tricky, while most people think they are saving money by changing the thermostat setting to a dramatic change while the home is not occupied. If you cool the home to 70 degrees at night and then leave for the day and have your unit set at 90, the unit will in turn have to work much harder to return your home to you lower setting upon arrival. A more efficient approach is to find a happy medium in between your desired temperature while at home and go with that. For example, if you enjoy temps between 70-75 degrees, it would be better to leave your thermostat at 75-79 degrees, thus requiring minimal energy output when returning.

Q) Will replacing a thermostat make a difference in my unit’s performance?

  1. It may help with unit efficiency in being able to set programs (unit run time).

Q) Certain areas of my home are not getting cool during the summer or warm during the winter, while others are getting too cold/hot, what does this mean?

  1. This could be caused by a clogged filter, poor return ventilation, closed registers, or air balance issues.

Q) Is there a way I can protect my air conditioning unit from weather or storm damage?

  1. Hail guards can be purchased to prevent dings and dents which damage a unit’s coil.

Q) How often should I change my air filters? Can my unit fail if I skip several changes?

  1. A unit can fail if not maintained properly, air filters should be changed or washed out every 1 month.

Q) When my air conditioning or heating kicks on, my doors close what is this caused from?

  1. Make sure that all rooms have the vents open, and that there is proper air flow under doors for the used air to return to your return air supply vent.
